Capt. Philip Thompson spent his early years in northeastern Florida where his father introduced him to fishing. Surf casting for the big beautiful red drum was a favorite experience. Philip remembers the first time he heard the reel’s drag scream and the excitement he felt – he was hooked! In the late seventies, Philip moved to Wilmington where his love of the ocean grew. He enhanced his fishing skills and became an avid surfer. He lived on Champ Davis Farm (Porter’s Neck) where Riches Inlet was just a short boat ride away – perfect for a day of fishing and surfing. Philip has since fished and surfed all over the Cape Fear Region and he is no stranger to the Outer Banks. He has also logged many hours offshore Gulf Stream fishing and he has commercial fished for grouper and king mackerel. Philip’s own fishing and surfing adventures have taken him to Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Bahamas. (He has many stories to tell!) Today, through AUI Charters, Philip shares his love, respect and knowledge of the ocean and coastal waters with others.
